Students Shine at Academies Dance Workshop

On Wednesday 28th April two Year 7 students, Thomas McKenna and Chantelle Walton travelled to the City of London Academy in Islington to take part in a collaborative dance workshop with six other academies.

Thomas and Chantelle will be performing the piece with 12 other students to Head Teachers and teachers from other Academies at the Annual Academies Conference on Friday 9th July.  Thomas said: “I was worried that we were the youngest there but there was nothing to worry about; everyone was really kind and it was exciting the way we were just kids from all different walks of life coming together to form something amazing!”

The contemporary piece based on the conference's main theme of establishing, embedding and influencing was choreographed by the dance teachers and students involved. It is being performed by students ranging from Year 7 to 12.

The Harefield Academy’s students were so focused and enthused throughout the day. They danced with great passion and showed a great aptitude for the performing art.

Watch out for these two rising stars in the world of dance and good luck for the final performance in July.

Chantelle’s Story
“I was so pleased to be chosen to represent The Harefield Academy at The London Academy. I have been dancing for six years and take various different types of dance ranging from classical ballet to street dance. It was a truly exciting day and a fantastic experience to be with pupils from other Academies that have the same interest in dance as me.

At the beginning of the day we were put into small groups; in mine there were four pupils from various Academies. We were asked to make up a dance and our theme was balances and unbalance. We were asked to think of some ideas; then teachers came around and helped give us some other ideas to produce a dance with our theme.

Once we all had worked out our dance we showed them to each other and then combined them to make a larger dance.

After we had completed the dance we all discussed what we could wear as costumes for the show in July. We all enjoyed the day greatly.”
