Year 7 had an amazing start to the season this year and recently made it to the Junior NBA London Finals
Basketball at The Harefield Academy has been growing over recent years due to the success of our Sixth Form Sporting Excellence Programme. Year 7 had an amazing start to the season this year and recently made it to the Junior NBA London Finals.
This is the first year anywhere in the world that the NBA (National Basketball Association) has run a junior league. Thirty schools were chosen and each given an NBA team to represent. Here at The Academy we were given ‘The Portland Trailblazers’.
The Year 7 Basketball team led by Dominkas Kolesnikovas won all of their group stage games and then two playoff games to make it to the last 4 schools in London. From this we were given a place in the Western Conference Finals at The University of East London on Wednesday 14th January.
On the day their opponents, Platanos Basketball Academy, came out very strong in the first quarter winning 16-2 and from there The Harefield Academy players had an uphill battle. Our team really fought hard with Kimani Smith playing very well, but unfortunately there was too much of a lead to chase down.
Although the team did not make the final they were incredibly lucky to meet the NBA Hall of Fame player Dikembe Mutombo, who is 7 feet 2 inches tall and has size 22 shoes! – This did amaze the boys!
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the boys and acknowledge their team positivity. They have done themselves and The Academy very proud.
