Celebrity Hairdresser John Frieda Talks to our Hair and Beauty Students

Four decades since he started out as a salon junior, when he spent his days folding towels and sweeping floors, John Frieda has cut, styled and blow dried hundreds of celebrities, launched salons, world-famous products and even published books.

John having a tour of The Harefield Academy

His brands are personal favourites of celebrities, beauty experts and consumers worldwide, and he found time to visit The Harefield Academy, to talk to our Hair and Beauty students about careers in his industry.

After a quick tour of The Academy, the students presented John with a presentation introduced by Lauren Shorey, Year 11, and listened to the many stories and great advice he had to give about starting out, and becoming successful in hairdressing.

Talking to the students in The Salon

His biggest bit of advice to the girls was 'to do everything to the best you can, whether it be sweeping or folding towels.' He believes that making the effort to do these little things well will help you get noticed in the industry. It worked for him.

He shared stories about how he came about getting his first job, styling for Vogue and cutting the famous 'Purdy' hairstyle for Joanna Lumley in the 1970s, as well as speaking some very motivational words to the students.

Signing books for the Hair and Beauty girls

John presented each student with a copy of one of his books and individually signed each one. He also left a bag of his products for the girls, and was given a special letter of thanks from The Harefield Academy.
