Sir Trevor Brooking Visits THA

Interest continues to grow in the flexible education programme provided by The Harefield Academy for the young Watford FC scholars. Having already hosted visits from Valencia FC, the Spanish FA, the English Premier League, Charlton Athletic, Darlington and Newcastle United, Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA’s Director of Football Development, together with Dave Parnaby and John McDermott, respective Academy Managers of Middlesbrough and Spurs arrived to discover how the programme works.

Staff from Watford's Academy team gave a formal presentation to the visitors before taking the guests to watch the junior scholars in training. The scholars finished their training session on Thursday by posing a number of questions to Sir Trevor. Naturally, they were intrigued with how he felt when given his first football contract and what it was like to play for England. As the scholars returned to their academic studies after training, the visitors were treated to a brief tour of the new ‘state of the art’ Academy building.

All were extremely interested not only in the flexible learning concept and partnership between The Academy and Watford FC but also in the finer detail of the programme. “We have nowhere near the depth of football talent in the different age groups that we should have in this country with a 55million population”, remarked Sir Trevor who with others, will watch the development of this innovative project with interest.
