Admissions
Admissions for 2010
1. Introduction
1.1 The Harefield Academy is an independent school which opened in September 2005. Full information outlining the aims and aspirations of The Academy can be found in the Prospectus.
1.2 In October 2009 there will be an Open Evening for parents of prospective new Year 7 students providing an opportunity to view The Academy and meet staff and students.
1.3 Section 86 of the 1998 Act requires LAs to make arrangements to enable parents to express a preference for the school where they would like their child to be educated, and to give reasons for that preference.
1.4 It is the legal duty of The Harefield Academy, except in some specified circumstances, to comply with the parents’ declared preference, and the admission committee would have regard to the reason the parents give for preferring The Harefield Academy, though this may not necessarily lead to an allocation of a space.
2. Procedures
2.1 The application procedures and timetable for applicants shall be that agreed locally and administered by the Local Authority. Such procedures and timetables will be published annually by the Local Authority.
3. Admissions Criteria
3.1 The Harefield Academy has one main year for admissions – students are admitted into Year 7 at the age of 11. However, students are also admitted into Year 12 each year at the age of 16+ and a few students are admitted into other year groups in The Academy but only when vacancies arise through existing pupils leaving The Academy.
3.2 The admission number to The Academy in any year of compulsory education shall be 150.
3.3 Admission to Year 7:
After the admission of students with statements of Special Educational Needs where The Harefield Academy is named on the statement, the criteria will be applied in order in which they are set out below as required by the Secretary of State for Education.
Looked After Children
Children in public care (children who are in the care or interim care of a local authority pursuant to S31 & 38 of the Children Act 1989, or children who are accommodated by a local authority, pursuant to S20 of the Children Act 1989).
Aptitude
10% of applicants in the relevant age group each year will be admitted by reference to aptitude in sport. An additional form will be available from The Harefield Academy if you wish your child’s sporting abilities to be considered. This form should be completed and returned to The Academy by the deadline given. Please note this is in addition to the main application which should be completed via the Local Authority.

Medical/social need
Children with professionally supported medical, social or special education need for whom it is essential to be admitted to The Academy as determined under arrangements agreed from time to time and published by the Governing Body.
Siblings
Applicants whose siblings currently attend The Academy and who will be attending The Academy on the date of admission. Parents need to declare the sibling link at time of application. The qualifying relationship is brother/sister, step brother/sister and foster children but does not include other extended family relationships or other family members who reside at the same address.
Distance
Applicants living nearest The Academy based on distance from home to The Academy, measured on a straight line in accordance with the Local Authority’s standard method of calculation. This distance will be measured from the front door of the home address to the nearest entrance to The Academy as designated by the Governing Body.
3.4 Admission to Year 12:
Application forms are available from and returnable to The Harefield Academy.
The Harefield Academy has a policy of open enrolment into the Sixth Form. The number of places available for external students (i.e. those who have not been Academy students in Year 11) is dependent upon the number of Year 11 Harefield Academy students wishing to continue into Year 12. Our numbers within each subject are constrained by physical accommodation and facilities.
A place in the Sixth Form would not be offered if it was considered that the admission of the applicant would have an adverse effect upon the provision of efficient education for other students in the group. If a place was refused the applicant’s family would have the right of appeal to an independent panel.
Over subscription will be determined by two criteria:
Students for whom places on appropriate courses are available and in order of GCSE point scores.
Entry Requirements
Level 3 Courses
A minimum of 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths. For some subjects a minimum B grade is required in that subject. We will need to see substantial evidence that any student who wants to study an Advanced Level course has clearly demonstrated a capability of completing substantial evidence of work within deadlines, and that they are capable of undertaking all the necessary work to the required standard.
Level 2 Courses
A minimum of 4 E grades at GCSE or equivalent
Level 1 Courses
A minimum of 3 grades at GCSE or equivalent
3.5 In-Year Applications for Admission:
Applications received other than at the normal time of applications for admission will be treated in the same manner as all other applications. Such applications will be dealt with in a timely manner without undue delay and the oversubscription criteria apply in the same manner as all other applications in accordance with the Borough coordinated scheme.
4. Waiting List
The Harefield Academy will maintain a waiting list for all oversubscribed Year groups. Applications will be placed in order according to the admissions criteria.
5. Appeals
All applicants who fail to gain a place at The Academy because of the application of the admissions criteria through over-subscription shall have full rights of appeal to the independent Appeals Panel established in accordance with the regulations. Following an unsuccessful appeal, Governors will not consider a further appeal during the same school year unless there has been a substantial change of circumstances for the child. Appeals will be undertaken strictly in accordance with the current DCSF Statutory Guidance Admissions Appeals Code.
6. Acceptance of Places for Year 7 2010
For admission to The Harefield Academy the Acceptance Form enclosed with the Offer of Admission should be returned to the Admissions Team at the London Borough of Hillingdon by the March 2010 deadline.
Please note: Proof of address at the time of acceptance must be sent along with the acceptance form. This will be in the form of: a copy of the current council tax schedule or a copy of the page of the tenancy agreement that shows the address and the date moved (the moving date is required if the move was within the last 6 months) and a copy of the child benefit schedule or a copy of the front of the child benefit book.
Failure to provide adequate proof of address may result in the offer being withdrawn by The Academy.
The Governors reserve the right to withdraw the offer of admission if it transpires that any information contained in the application form is false or misleading.
